Despite the political backlash, the UK failed to announce any formal return of the islands and instead, aims to transform the archipelago into the largest no-take Marine Reserve in the Indian Ocean. This would turn the Chagos Islands into a 640,000km² protected area, meaning no fishing, mining, or dredging would be allowed.
