Some Challenging Writing Prompts for March — Spring and Spiritual Awareness Month
March is upon us! Wow, was there anyone in history who just attested to the fact that “March always comes ‘march-ing’ in on us?” Tssh. .boom. .bah. Well, seriously, I’ll have to Google that. But anyway, March is a momentous month in its own right. You’ve got Saint Patrick’s Day, the arrival of Spring. Also, it is Spiritual Health Month! Wow, what an amazing thing. So, if you are ready for the trees to start blooming and temperatures to start warming, then here are a few writing prompts I am throwing out there. (Of course, this list is hardly scratching the surface).
Spring Fiction Challenges
Oh this would be a whole other domain and world altogether, but what fiction ideas come into mind for spring? Maybe you could get your creative artistry to timbre by imagining the experience of a tree or a flower coming into full bloom. Or, what about some person’s coming to age in the season of renewed life? If you want to open doors to some sort of Sunflower zombie horror film, I guess you could do that too. Or maybe we could just stick with the reenactment of Bambi. No one is asking what Bambi’s and Thumper’s descendants are up to, by the way.
Zooming In on Spiritual Health
Ah, spirituality! Such a broad and open-ended topic, isn’t it(even unboundedly so). Why not take one or a few writings to reflect on what shape your spiritual life takes? Is it the strong religious faith you are rooted in and the vibrant faith community in which you are a part? Is it the practice of yoga or the reading of sacred texts? Hey, the sky is the limit here. Since one of the root meanings of the word is “the deeper essence or principle of something,” it could include anything that helps connect you to what goes beyond yourself and show awe and humility towards what is sacred and numinous at the heart of things. Perhaps your spiritual life includes the reading of poetry, backpacking trips, or even role-playing game conventions. Hey, whatever works for you! Take some time this month of spiritual health to bring light on that realm that truly binds everything else together.
Ah, Ye Green Tidings and Four-Leaf Clovers
Okay, it’s the month of green! Some cannot get enough of those green traditions and myths that connect them to their ancestors or spiritual roots. Others still slap on an old-fashioned green button and pray they can get through the day without getting pinched. But what excites you about that special day of March 17, celebrated so feverishly in so many corners of the world? What about some of those quintessential customs that leave whole rivers turned green and so many parades and special foods? Take some time to reflect on Saint Patrick’s Day customs close to your heart. Hey, you might be chewing on that green for a little while!
Spring Is Springing and March Is Well... Marching
Yes, here we go again with the alliteration and puns. But doesn’t spring bring that whole numinous rhythm and momentum? So much of Nature has been slumbering for so long and now there’s a chance to rise up and bloom again! And there’s a special hymn my college choir sang that comes to mind, “we are marching in the light of God!” Are you ready for this season of renewal and sprouting up of seeds? It’s okay if you are not, some of us may need the extra hibernation. How are you finding balance and promise in this season’s new beginnings? Are you ready to spring up and march ahead?
