Goodness, we are approaching May already! What an amazing year it has been so far. How exciting for the times ahead. I always love May in Iowa so much. The days start to get warmer while the trees and flowers bloom. The Sun’s rays seem to shine a little brighter as the days get longer. Final harsh winds and cold air from winter finally dissipate completely. May is also an amazing time for writing.

If you want to get your quill pen and ink juices flowing, here are some fun May-themed writing prompts to help get you started. Oh, what a mesmerizing month we begin now!

May Day Surprises

March came in like a lamb and left like a lion(or vice versa). April brought those showers and April Fool’s Day and the like. In many cultures, May begins with May Day — the day to deliver baskets of goodies and bring on festivals of happy cheer.

What surprises would you hope to find in a special May Day basket offered to you? If May itself could be a whole large basket of innumerable blessings, what might you hope to find inside? What are you most looking forward to as the breath of spring continues to warm plants and animals to renewed life while summer’s youthful green creeps behind? What personal life goals and spiritual callings do you find pushing you forward?

Celebrations Abounding!

May is the month of dances, graduations, and spiritual celebrations. It is a month of music, festivals, parades, and special trips. May is time for jubilees!

Pick a famous May celebration and fly with it. Do you have a funny graduation story? What about a fictional story about a prom date turned worst nightmare? Cinco de Mayo poetry? A technical writing about how to pack a May Day basket? The sky is the limit here, just make sure to have fun!

May the 4th…Well, Let’s See Here

Since the inception of Star Wars a quarter of a century ago, May 4th has become Star Wars Day. So yes, let’s travel to a faraway galaxy and get our Jedi writing powers on. (Sorry, I can’t resist).

If you are up to it, feel free to get right in there with Luke Skywalker or Han Solo and defend the galaxy. If you are not in the mood, maybe instead reflect on some of the deeper themes from the franchise. What spiritual and moral insights might we gather from the training of Jedi and resistance to the dark side? As with any other topic, there are always more riches to be mined with Star Wars.

Offering Reverence

In the United States, Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May to honor personnel who died while serving in the military(other nations hold similar commemorative holidays). The day has also become a milestone for Americans to remember loved ones who have gone before.

This seems like such a solemn writing theme, but maybe its dismal nature makes the theme even more necessary. What tribute do you need to make to a loved one? How might you honor the sacrifices of those who answered the call to serve and protect? We can hardly ever even begin here. Though a powerful medium, words can only take you so far.

So we have explored a few possible writing prompts to get us started for May.

Of course, we are barely scratching from the surface here. As quickly as each flower blooms and the last bird builds its nest, this month will have once again passed by. Surely, composing pieces to help savor the months’ riches will slow things down at least a little. But we must not flex our pen muscles too much, as Nature in full bloom will call us to rise and dance in her green glory while the Sun’s rays warm us.
